I figured it out because my volume control options had a red x. I then uninstalled the Modem driver in Device Manager and deleted it from the system so Windows wouldn't reinstall it. Even my onboard microphone on my laptop is not detected as a valid audio device. As it stands, I am not even able to use Lync for IMs, because the process is always at "Not Responding" state in task manager. when i try to delete files inside system32 drivers folder, it says i do not have priveledges when im the admin. I haven't uinstalled Lync 2010 yet, strangely this works with both my internal Realtek sound, my Plantronics 720 headset and my Plantronics Calisto conference speaker. My solution was to delete all USB device driversfrom the device managerunder the Universal Serial Bus controllers. After I uninstalled these apps, I lost my video and had to power cycle the laptop, then it redetected the video, but Lync now recognizes my audio device! so much fun figuring out these random pop up out of nowhere high noise low impact low priority problems. I refreshed device manager to see if the devices would auto-install again... I'm not sure how common knowledge the patch is as MS stated they would be rolling the fix into a patch update. Now I can once again hear and interact with online Lync meetings at work.

Same issues listed...devices work on Skype so I know there is no issue with the devices.
