My thoughts are: You could have a failed power button on the machine. I REALLY REALLY hope its the PSU as its not very economical to replace the motherboard. Got help? The plug is working fine as i tested a lamp on it. But, in either case, once you power it on and it fails, the led or light on the power switch "usually" goes to amber.

I looked at the capacitors on the motherboard and none were bulging / needed replacement. Edit: I got a new PSu in there, and now it works perfectly fine.
