Both have (groups of) Icons placed in different areas of the desktop. By the way SP1 didn't solve it as we expected. IconRestore was a free option adding right click menu items (while pointing at desktop) to save and restore layout, but not automatic.I think this problem has something to do with automatic
The problem in my case was a weird issue, but it is now fixed.
Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility. Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window It only seems to move once. Crazy. No, I am not serious.

It's a new laptop and I'm still setting it up and this was the first time I'd used the new Family account and switched back to my admin account. When I switched back from the other account it thought my desktop was 1440x900 instead of 1600x900 and asked me if I wanted to save the icons layout.
