I've run similar tests on our XP machines and come up with results that were clearly based on the amount of fragemented files on the drive... If I start a maintenance run manually via Control Panel, Windows will start defragging my SSD, which obviously shouldn't happen.

If I am on my computer I am > not idle. I know Azureus/Vuze and uTorrent both do this.Per my comment about sending drives to an early grave. I can 'optimize' my SSD, and all my HDD say they're defragged in my defrag and optimization menu. All my drivers are up to date, as well as all my Windows updates. It can interrupt the process and make it take even longer. I've already basically disabled every auto update process I can, including in my optimization and defrag menu, and set up power management to prevent sleeping and such trying to keep it

In addition, if you choose "MORE OPTIONS" you can remove system restore checkpoints and backup images which can use up quite a bit of your hard drive. The same quantity of fragmentation on a small drive gives a much bigger percentage than on a large drive.
AND this study compares relative performance to things like web browsing, word processing, reading email, and listening to music files... I run my spyware removal, virus scan....all the necessary things to keep a computer running smoothly...nothing seems to work. I have uninstalled in this morning (just prior to typing this). Some files will be in hundreds of fragments to a dramatic enough degree that playback of video files will actually skip. All I want is stability, with decent protection so I can game, and do my productive tasks. It's too frequent and consistent to be something like an update download or install causing it, and checking updates show everything is up to date, not to mention I tried disabling
